A Letter from

It is my great honor, as it has been every year, to evaluate the submissions for the Color of the Year. This year, however, was truly special. Although I applaud the effort of the marketing teams of the many paint brands that annually participate in this long staid ritual, there was one submission that rose far above the rest. This year’s award winner is Backdrop, the Los Angeles based paint brand started in 2018 by Natalie and Caleb Ebel, in collaboration with Coming Soon.A Letter from

Backdrop has quickly risen the ranks to become a go-to source of color authority and has created a sea change in our beloved paint industry, truly making paint a true design purchase.
With Backdrop’s submission, in collaboration with Coming Soon, they have so fully captured the essence that is Color of the Year and created a color that so overwhelmingly embodies the spirit of this Committee and I dare say solicited in me an emotional reaction that I have never felt in my years overseeing this great honor.
As a result, myself and the rest of the Committee, after great deliberation, have decided that our work has been completed. Our decision to discontinue the annual Color of the Year is not something we take lightly. Although bittersweet, it is our conviction that it is better to ‘go out on top’ than suffer an inevitable decline in spirit and quality. So, there will be no more color(s) of the year after this final 2022 award.
To Backdrop, we thank you for your truly fantastic work. To the other participants, also thank you for your efforts. It has been my great honor to review the many shades of green, beige, and purple put forth before this committee these past years.

P.S. - a hearty congratulations to you as well for reading down this far. Swirly, the National Color Committee, and this award are not real. This is just a cheeky way to poke fun at the pomp and circumstance of this staid tradition in the paint industry, that is Color of the Year.... Hopefully, we can all agree to end this tradition now.
